Located in Marshall County, Penitentiary Pit is formed entirely in sandstone and was used to hold prisoners during the Civil War. The high side allows an 81’ drop into the open-air shaft that is 80’ x 120’. There are several ferns and large oak trees growing in the bottom of the pit. The trees have grown above the lip of the pit, creating a stunning view.
